Ryann Martinek and the PH Policy Club
Join Ryann Martinek from the New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) to talk about STIs, local data, and policy and programs to advance sexual and reproductive health in New Orleans. Prior to her work at NOHD, Ryann taught comprehensive sex ed for years to middle and high school students and strives to broaden access to education and health care through inclusivity and stigma reduction. In this interactive session, participants can anticipate gaining a greater understanding on STIs, health campaigns, testing resources and sex education locally. Additionally, opportunities will be shared as on how to engage in sexual health work in the community!

Hookup culture is just the latest “new” sexual culture. This event includes a brief historical introduction to hookup culture with Tulane professor Lisa Wade, author of American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus, and an overview of what makes hooking up “cultural.” Followed by a free book giveaway and a Q and A with the author.

The language we have for talking and thinking about romantic and sexual relationships can feel limiting or negative. What do you call someone you have only just started dating? Does a so-called “situationship” have to be bad? During this informal, interactive workshop, we will adapt words from geology and the art world to describe love, sex, and relationships. We will focus on countercultural, LGBTQ, and college-age relationships, and aim to build a more inclusive, positive relationship vocabulary. No background knowledge needed!

This talk will explore the political and legal milestones in the decriminalization of bisexuality and homosexuality in the United States, highlighting the progress made over time and the transformative power of social change. It will also offer a forward-looking perspective on the challenges to sexual freedom and personal autonomy in contemporary politics, with a discussion of potential impacts of initiatives like Project 2025. Students will be guided through the inspiring history of positive social and sexual progress in America and discuss how to remain engaged, informed, and active in building a smarter, safer, and more inclusive culture of sex positivity.

We will have an interactive worksheet for students to fill out while they watch the film; therefore, they will have a take-home resource with all the information that they learn from the film. Additionally, we will be pulling raffle winners for our special giveaway items, and food will be provided. This aligns with the Sex Week mission by providing accurate insight into
the menstrual cycle and its effects on the people who experience it.
